Mercedes-Benz R107SL

The R107 SL – built from February 1971 to 1989, available first as 350SL, then came 280SL, 380SL, 450SL and 500SL until September 1985, then available as 300SL, 420SL, 500SL & abroad as 560SL until late 1989, altogether 237,287 were built. Available with soft & hard tops, disc brakes all round & aluminium panels on some of the later V8 models for the sake of fuel consumption as much as performance. Early models had steel rims, though alloys were available as an option, alloys wheels also came later as standard, front and rear spoilers came on the early 500SL models to assist with high speeds and from September 1985 a colour coded front spoiler was added with the rear spoiler still being reserved for the 500SL.

Power and performance went from the 280SL at 182hp / 129mph to 240hp / 140mph for the later 500SL – the 560SL should have been more powerful overall but it had too much emission regulation equipment, the 500SL recorded a 0 – 60 of 7.4 seconds. MPG averaged at about 15 for the V8’s and 19 for the 6 cylinders.

Designed more as a cruiser than a sportscar, creature comforts were abundant and ride quality wonderful, mixed with classic good looks, an everlasting classic.
